You may not think about your posture on a regular basis, but it can have a dramatic impact on your overall health. Your body is designed for your head, rib cage and pelvis to be perfectly aligned upon one another, keeping your spine in an optimal, healthy position. As we get older and live more sedentary lives, we spend more and more time hunched over our phones and laptops, sitting in our cars, and watching TV. Postural screenings can be a great first step toward maintaining a healthy spine and enjoying a life of improved flexibility, mobility, strength and balance.
What is a Digital Postural Screening?
Postural screenings are used to pinpoint misalignments and stress points that may be causing pain, aches and discomfort in various parts of your body. As part of our Digital Postural Screenings at Cole Sports Chiropractic & Rehab, we capture your posture from a front and side view, then compare these images to an optimal posture for each position. The front view analyzes how your head, shoulders, rib cage and hips are aligned. The side view focuses on the alignment of your head, shoulders, hips and knees. (See image below.)
How do you use the information from the screening?
Any measurable deviation from normal posture can cause weakening of your spine and place unwanted stress on your nervous system. Both athletes and non-athletes experience a variety of aches and pains that can be attributed to abnormal posture, including muscle strains, disc injury, back pain, neck pain, shoulder injuries, carpal tunnel symptoms, scoliosis, work lifting injuries, sports injuries, knee issues, ankle injuries, etc. A misaligned spine can even be a root cause of seemingly unrelated issues, such as headaches or trouble sleeping.
If we uncover an issue through a Digital Postural Screening, we can diagnosis the problem and create a customized treatment plan. Most posture related spinal issues can be effectively treated through gentle, noninvasive treatments, such as massage therapy, injury rehabilitation exercises, and chiropractic adjustments.
