What is Functional Movement Screening?

Any home builder will tell you that a successful building project must start with a strong foundation. If you apply this same principle to your body, you’ll see the advantage of taking part in a Functional Movement Screening to identify movement issues that impact the very foundation of movement within your body.

What is Functional Movement Screening?
Functional Movement Screening (FMS) consists of seven tests that assess specific movement patterns that are considered key to optimal movement. The root cause of faulty movement is normally tight or weak muscles, or coordination/motor control issues. Functional Movement Screening can pinpoint tight and weak areas in your body, allowing you to make precise changes in your movement patterns before these issues cause injury.

Why are faulty movements so detrimental?
Often times, faulty movement patterns cause mechanical stress within your body which leads to cumulative micro-trauma followed by injury. Faulty movements can cause injury directly or cause you to compensate in such a way that additional faulty movement and injuries arise.  For example, a baseball pitcher who injures his elbow may compensate by adjusting his pitching style in a manner that causes another injury.

What is the purpose of Functional Movement Screening?
FMS helps identify people who are at risk of injury. By correcting faulty movement patterns, you can alleviate injury and even improve performance. Once an assessment is complete, a trained health practitioner can suggest specialized workouts to reinforce proper movement based specifically on your FMS results.

OPEN HOUSE SPECIAL: Free FMS Assessments
As part of our clinic Open House on May 6, 2017, Cole Sports Chiropractic & Rehab will be performing free FMS deep squat assessments. The deep squat assessment is one of seven tests performed in a Functional Movement Screening. It is thought to be the most predictive of the seven tests, and examines the symmetrical movement of squatting. To pass the deep squat, you need to have optimal mobility in your ankles, knees hips and shoulders, along with stability throughout your spine.

Join Cole Sports Chiropractic & Rehab at our Open House on Saturday, May 6 from 3:00-8:00PM. We’re offering free FMS deep squat assessments, digital posture screenings, and a foam rolling class (3:00-4:00PM).
